Candidate for Mayor
To be a leader, Melrose needs a leader.
Monica has spent more than a decade serving all residents of Melrose and leading efforts to better our city. Now, Monica wants to put this wealth of experience to work as Mayor of Melrose.
Monica has a unique breadth of experience, which includes six City Council terms serving both citywide and as the Ward Two Alderman for the Horace Mann neighborhood. She is the current President of the Mass Municipal Councillors’ Association and sits on the Mass Municipal Association executive board.
Monica has the distinction of being the sole mayoral candidate to have served on the School Committee, a term that saw the creation of the Franklin School’s Early Childhood Center (ECC) and a vote for a new superintendent of schools.
During her time a City Councilor, Monica has insisted upon fiscal discipline and tight budget control in order to curb increases in city taxes, fees, and water and sewer rates. She has been a fierce advocate for accountability and transparency, consistently calling for a more open government.
Monica has been leading the way to make Melrose a better place to live. Last year, Monica organized a citywide volunteer cleanup effort removing 2306 lbs of trash from our streets and sidewalks. She notably led the way for the creation of one of the most used city amenities, The Melrose Dog Park at Ell Pond. She has proposed an ordinance to license the use of shared mobility vehicles like Limebike.
As the only former ward alderman, Monica takes a neighborhood approach to government and believes involving stakeholders in the decision making process yields the best results. As Ward Two Alderman, Monica helped coordinate the implementation of the largest public works project in the city’s history – a $ 6 million project to reduce long-time flooding and improve drainage for area residents and taxpayers.
Monica’s passionate advocacy for Melrosians led her to fight for change at the state level. This has led to her appointment by Governor Baker to his Advisory Commission on Local Government. Coupled with her leadership with the Mass Municipal Association, her network of local and state leaders uniquely places Monica in a position to help formulate and bring best practices to Melrose.
Realizing the importance of this race to the future of Melrose, Monica left her job as Compliance Director at a nationwide commercial insurance company focused on providing insurance solutions for the energy industry.
Before making the move to insurance, most of her professional career was spent in home financing and real estate, working directly with individuals seeking to purchase or refinance their homes. Monica deeply understands the housing market and recognizes the importance our residents place on maintaining and improving property values.
Monica believes every Melrosian deserves the best from their city government, whether it is a strong and flourishing education system, thoughtful and transparent budget development, or taking steps to make our government more sustainable both fiscally and environmentally. In each of these areas and more, Monica has been a leader.
Now, Monica hopes to take her experience into the Mayor’s office to bring leadership to Melrose and, in turn, make Melrose a leader.

Candidate for Mayor
Elect a proven Leader to make Melrose a Leader
“I love Melrose –my lifelong home. I have been honored to serve Melrose for more than a decade, having played a role in our many successes.
As an Alderman, a former School Committee member, and through my leadership with the Mass Municipal Association, I have the experience needed to become our next mayor, while also bringing a much needed fresh eye to the corner office.
I am ready to make Melrose a leader in the areas that matter most -- a leader in education, in fiscal management, in sustainability and in community engagement.
I hope to win your support and more importantly your vote. I am truly, grateful to have this opportunity.”
